Leadership is something that can be developed intentionally. Now some folks may have more talent than others, but when it is improved upon it increases potential. My opportunity to lead came from the classroom.
Recently I was given the opportunity to join the American College of Physicians. It is an internal medicine organization for doctors and students. Each year the ACP sends members to capitol hill to advocate for healthcare legislation that impacts the health of the nation. It is called Leadership Day and it is an opportunity to meet with various members of Congress that lead our nation. Though I have yet to start my first year in medical school, I went to Washington D.C. to represent Texas.
When taking a stand and leading an agenda, I learned that not all people with agree. Multiple Congress representatives did not agree with the idea that the federal government should increase funding to graduate medical education programs that would increase primary care access to rural areas. Instead many felt that the states should take that role. I respect their opinions and views, though I worry primary care will suffer. However one house representative was able to create positive change in the healthcare world. His name is Dr. Michael Burgess, and he was given a standing ovation during our ACP morning meeting.
My journey in leadership development is progressing. I hope to join the student government of ACOM and lead the student internal medicine club. My agenda is to serve others and to make a positive social impact.
